Potsdamer Platz then and now

Berlin Potsdamer PlatzAfter the fall of the Berlin wall in 1981 and the reunification of Germany, it was clear that Berlin Mitte was once again to become the centre of Berlin. Plans quickly took place for the reconstruction and reconfiguration of this largely unused area. It was decided that the wounds that were created from the building of the Berlin wall on August 13, 1961 should be quickly mended. One of the biggest wounds in the city was Potsdamer Platz where there was only one building left on Potsdamer Strasse after the building of the wall. This area had once been the busiest square in Europe in the 20s and 30s.

Now mostly everything’s changed in this area, although there are still some holes in the city planning. However, there are ample shopping and world heritage opportunities in every form for you to experience. From world premier movie functions, to delicious upscale restaurants, from the Potsdamer shopping mall to doing a tour of the Embassies that surround this area, there’s something for everyone!

World Heritage Site in Berlin Mitte

Blick auf die MuseumsinselYou should not forget to visit Museum Island during your stay in Berlin. In the Bode Museum, Pergamon Museum, Old Museum, New Museum and the Old National Gallery you will find everything from archaeological collections to art from the 1500s. Also in the area around the Museum Island are the Lustgarten and the Schlossplatz. At this time there are still parts of Museum Island that are being restored and there are plans to create a central underground entry point connecting the museums on the island. In 1999 UNESCO put the Museum Island on the list of World Heritage Sites.

There is no end to Berlin Mitte
